Duties and taxes are worked out on the CIF value, which is the car's price plus sea freight. Customs duty is 25% of the CIF value. Cars with engines over 2,000 cc pay excise duty of 10% of the CIF value plus customs duty. The environmental levy is 20% of the CIF value for cars 8 years old, 50% for cars 9 years old or more and nothing otherwise. VAT is 18% of the CIF value plus customs duty.
